A team of 18 athletes to represent Bahamas at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu
With a mere two weeks before the commencement of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, the Bahamas Association of Athletics Association has put together an 18-member team to represent them in Daegu, South Korea.
The Association, whose selection of athletes had proved to be pretty commendable at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France, has decided to create a balanced squad comprising of both young and experienced athletes. Among the trusted squad that
is going to represent Bahamas at the World Championships, the profiles and achievements of some of the athletes have been shared below.
On the top of the list is Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie, the 35-year-old veteran sprinter who specialises in 100m and 200m competitions. The veteran runner, who cherishes having a successful career so far, was the gold medal winner over the distance of 200m at
the 2001 Edmonton World Championships. Other prominent achievements for the veteran runner include a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and a third place finish at the 2009 Berlin World Championships.
Ferguson-McKenzie, the experienced runner, who will also contest in the 100m sprint in Daegu, has recently marked her season best of an 11.09 seconds’ finish. The season best finish over the distance of 200m for the veteran runner stands at 22.76 seconds.
While her personal best over the two distances stands at 10.91 seconds in the 100m and 22.19 seconds in the 200m meet, respectively.
The next formidable athlete Bahamas is going to rely on is Donald Thomas, the 27-year-old high jumper who also happens to be the 2007 Osaka World High Jump champion. Just like Ferguson-McKenzie, Donald has also had a successful 2010 and 2011 season. With
a jump as high as (7’7-1/4”), he is ranked as the tenth best performer on the world list. His personal best, which stands at 2.35m, was marked in Osaka that culminated in bringing him the world championships title.
In the triple jump challenges, Bahamas will be represented by Leevan Sands, the veteran triple jumper who bagged the 2003 Paris World Championships and also dominated the field at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The athlete, who is going to turn 30 in four days
time, boasts of a seasonal best of 17.13m, while his personal best stands at 17.59m, which is also a Bahamas National record.
Next in line is Chris Brown, the fourth finisher of the 2005 Helsinki World Championships who also bagged last year’s World Indoor title in Doha. Chris, the 400m and 4x400m relay specialist has been an impressive performer at Diamond League events. For acquiring
the status of the world’s eighth fastest runner over the distance, he boasts of a personal best of 44.79 seconds.
