A title victory at Paris Masters and Novak Djokovic will be the world number one again – Tennis News
Serbian juggernaut, Novak Djokovic, took off the 2012 ATP season as the world number one player but couldn’t sustain his top rank after the Wimbledon Championships this summer. He was toppled by the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer,
after his 17th Grand Slam title victory at the All England Club. Currently holding the second spot in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Djokovic has been labouring extremely hard in the past few months to reclaim his throne from
Federer but hasn’t succeeded as yet.
The 25-year-old Serb hasn’t been able to bag as many titles as he did in the 2011 ATP season but he still has five trophies under his belt this year. He has won three ATP titles after falling to the world number two spot and has
come mighty close to Federer in the ranking points. Djokovic is just one more title away from reclaiming the world number one position and the upcoming Paris Masters tournament is the perfect opportunity for him to accomplish his goal.
Djokovic has repeatedly cited during the last two months that his prime aim is to take over Federer in the ATP rankings by the end of the season. His intensity to materialize his dream was clearly seen in the last two tournaments
he played. The Serbian has won back-to-back titles this month to earn 1500 rankings points and is merely 195 points away from Federer. The Swiss Maestro rides the top of rankings list with 12,165 points, whilst Djokovic is right behind him with 11,970.
If Djokovic manages to win the Paris Masters title, he can certainly surpass Federer and reclaim the world number one rank. The Swiss veteran is also aware of this scenario and has also vowed to sustain his world number one position
for the rest of the season. He is the defending champion in Paris, where he routed the French number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, to lift gold last year. Federer will be fighting not only to defend his Paris Masters title but his world number one rank as well.
Djokovic and Federer haven’t faced each other in Paris and it is quite possible that these two might play in the title match. However, the British number one, Andy Murray, will also feature the Paris Masters event as the hot favourite
for winning the title. It will be really interesting to see the outcome of the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season and no wonder we might see a new world number one player.
