Why are they most commonly found in the central United States compared to other regions?

They are  most commonly found there because it is where relatively cool, dry  air masses from Canada meet relatively warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico collide. When they collide they form powerful storm fronts that often produce thunderstorms as the cooler air masses push the warmer ones higher up into the atmopshere. This uplift causes moisture in the air to condence and form clouds. When uplift and condensation occur rapidly and with a lot of force they cause these clouds to form into the typical anvil shape of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud) which usually produces rain or virga  (rain that evaporates before it hits the ground) as well as thunder and lightning. If ther e is enough energy in the storm, it may rotate, if this happens, downdrafts in the storm may push it to the ground and a tornado is formed.

Other phenomena that occur in thunderstorms are hail and microbursts (a sudden powerful downdraft of wind)

Nearly all tornados (over 90%)  occur in the United States, most of those in the nation's mid-section, because it is where cool dry air masses frequently meet warm, humid ones.
