A vegetarian swimmer diet plan?

Well, swim team started for me today, and I totally blow. Over the summer, I got sick, and my body ate most of my muscle because I couldn't keep food down well. And because I couldn't keep food down, or even really eat at all, I didn't get most of my vitamins and nutrients I needed, and because of my illness, I couldn't really practice over the summer either. So now I went from being one of the top swimmers on my team, to the worst, and I feel like a sack of c**p.

I need a way to improve my diet so I can handle swimming and get my muscles back on the right track, but I'm also a vegetarian. So, what can I do?

  1. Eat meat! Your body needs it. I don't know of any good swimmers that were vegetarians. The two don't mix.

  2. It is very possible to be a vegetarian and be a very good swimmer. I had many friends on my college team that were vegetarians and swam well! (we were a Division I school which is the highest/best you can get) It just takes a lot of practice and focus to be able to get everything you need from your diet to be able to give your body what it needs for optimal performance! I would recommend seeing a dietitian-not just a nutritionist. (they aren't certified and gone through the proper training in nutrition-anyone can call themselves a nutritionist) They will be able to work with you and your training schedule to find a diet that works the best for you! Good luck!

  3. jeezus! do you see any correlation between your "illness" and the vegetarian thing? your body is eating itself for want of food.

  4. I don't believe in swimmers being vegetarians being swimmers. Swimmers need the meat. A lot of meat.

Try eating lots of tofu or stuff like that.
