A vertical spring (ignore its mass), whose spring constant is 1100 N/m, is attached to a table and is compressed 0.160 m.

(a) What speed can it give to a 0.400 kg ball when released?

(b) How high above its original position (spring compressed) will the ball fly?

  1. a) .5*K*compress^2 = .5*Mass*speed^2

    .5*1100 *.016*.016 =.5* .4*speed^2

    speed = 0.8390ms-1

    b) .5*K*compress^2 = mgh

    .5*1100 *.016*.016 = .4*10*h

    h = 0.0352m

  2. F=-kx ,1100x.16=176 N

    f=ma, 176=0.4xa ,a=176/.4=440 m/s^2
