  2. By spewing gases and dust into the atmosphere, a volcano can effect the rate of absorption/reflection of solar energy in the atmosphere, making the atmosphere less transparent. Generally, the less radiation that reaches the ground, the colder the troposphere, since it is primarily heated via conduction from the ground. So, if the sky is darker (due to ash and smoke) you'll get colder ground and colder atmosphere. Of course, this would be temporary in nature, since the particles would eventually settle.
