when you set the ball or do an overhead pass, do you like get in your ready position with your hands up in a triangle and wait till the ball actually hits your hands and then push up, or do you like start to push up just a little bit before the ball hits your hands, contacting it in the air?

tried to explain my question as best i could, lol.

  1. As soon as the ball hits your hand, you're going to push back by extending your arms. Most of the power from a set should come from your legs, unless you're doing a touch set, like a quick in the middle. It's a timing thing though, you don't want the ball to come to a rest in your hands or you'll get called for a carry ball.

Also, you can have your hands ready above your forhead if you want. Bringing them up at the last second is for a very advanced setter. Worry about the basics first.

  2. The best way to set the ball is to wait untili it is within arms reach then put your hands up and set it. You don't want to put your hands up first cause then its hard to focus cause your hands are in the way and it is easier to get set and you can run faster without your hands already ready.

  3. you get in the ready postion but you start to push before the ball hits your hands

  4. ok.. I'm a setter on my volleyball team and I just got back from camp in Shippensburg where they helped me with my set. The coach I had told me it's like a catch and throw motion. He would throw the ball to me and have me catch it and then throw it like a set back to him. Eventually, he made me do that faster and it began to be a fluent motion. Like the other person who answered said.. the power is supposed to come more from your legs. So you have to be ready when the ball is coming. Also.. my coach had told me that having your hands up and ready is best if you are just getting started.

    I hope that helps!

  5. for maximum accuracy the best think is to get in a ready position by letting the ball guide into your fingers. This allows you is push off with you legs and set a playable ball. When you overreact and meet the ball as it is coming down it is more likely that you will create a lift which is an automatic side out and point to the opposing team. the way you can tell you are setting wrong it mostly by the noise the contact has with your hand and the ball any ref will catch that immediately.

    Best of Luck!

  6. you push up when the comes to you

  7. i contact the ball in the air thats the best thing to do =]]

  8. uhmm. in volleyball i am the setter. what i do is have my hands somewhat near my chest and when the ball gets closer raise my hands and once my hands come into contact with the ball i push out and send the ball towards the hitter. i hope that helped!!!

  9. The second part of your question is a good way to jam a finger.  Wait to put your hands up until the very last second, you dont want to tip the other team what you are doing.
