A walk off double from Rene Tosoni ends Minnesota Twins 11-game losing streak – MLB Update
The Minnesota Twins had a lot to be happy about on Thursday, September 22 at Target Field in Minneapolis as the club finally managed to break their 11-games losing streak after the club ousted the Seattle Mariners 3-2 with a walk off double from Rene Tosoni.
The run came from Trevor Plouffe and it set the team alight with joy as the club now looks to avoid 100 losses in the season.
Starters from both ends were on top of their game. Blake Beavan went into the game with a memorable victory over the Texas Rangers in his previous outing. Looking for another scoreless game, the 22-year-old managed to give two runs off six hits from seven
innings. His strong start however was matched by Twins’ starter Anthony Swarzak.
The player managed to give up just two runs from nine hits in six innings. His good stand on the mound ensured the Mariners would not be able to muster their strength against the Twins. Steve Delabar earned the loss for the Mariners. The player conceded
the one run in the ninth that sent him to 1-1 standing in the season.
Joe Nathan shined bright for the Twins in the end as he managed an inning without conceding a walk, a hit or a run. The player ensured a comfortable progression to the ninth inning for the Twins’ hitters.
Mariners looked like the stronger club between the teams, leading in to the third game of the series. Needing a win to avoid a series sweep, Minnesota pulled out all the stops to make it home in the end of the day. However they’re start was not as memorable
as Swarzak was hoping for. The starter had problems early on as his lack of command gave the Mariners an edge in the top first.
Ichiro Suzuki kicked off the scoring trail when he ran home from the second base on a single from Justin Smoak. The run put the Seattle side 1-0 and set the tempo for the encounter. The club went 2-0 up against the Twins in the top second as Suzuki marshalled
a run home with a sacrifice fly to right-field. He led in Chris Gimenez for the second run.
Needing a breather from the outburst of the Seattle hitters, the Twins managed a run in the bottom third. Drew Butera grounded into a double play and got out, along with Joe Benson. However, in doing so, the Mariners allowed for Tosoni to score the first
for the Twins.
Butera and Tosoni were involved in the second run as well. Tosoni scored the second run after Butera smashed a line drive single to left-fielder, Trayvon Robinson, in the bottom of the fifth. At 2-2, the Twins now had a chance to break free from their losing
streak.
They did so in style as Tosoni smashed a double in the bottom of the ninth towards centre-field, leading Trevor Plouffe home for the all important walk off victory. Tosoni was very much the Man of the Match as he scored on two occasions and registered a
game winning RBI double. The designated hitter went 3-for-4 and held the Twins to 95 losses in the season.
