Question:

A way to stop flooding from global warming?

I was watching inconvenient truth the other day and there is the bit where it shows the sea level rising really high and flooding most of the world. Well i live near the sea, and don’t want to drown, so i got to thinking. Maybe if we lower the sea level a bit, when the water level rises then it won’t rise high enough to flood.

Anyway, here is the plan. Everyone who can should take a bucket of sea water and pour it down the sink. If lots of people put the effort in, we could lower the sea level substantially and create a better world for our children to live.

Isn't it a great idea???????????

  1. Save the wear and tear on your legs and your bucket.  That movie was nothing but science-fiction, nothing in it was close to true.  Kind of scary because Jim Hansen, who some tout as a wonderful scientist and who's some kind of biggie at NASA GISS was behind all the lies along with his employer Al Gore.  Makes it impossible to have any faith in data that comes out of GISS, but that's his fault.

Sea levels haven't risen and aren't going to.  Don't worry...build a cottage on the beach if you want to and enjoy life. Forget these alarmist mongrels and their lies.

  2. Good idea, but if that fails simply encourage people to build on high ground.

  3. I must say, it ranks right up there with most of the AGW proponents ideas.

  4. The sinks all eventually drain to the sea so that won't work.  But my wife asked about if the smog could be fixed by using big fans and blowing it through cleaning filters.  That's the hard way to fix smog.  Its easier to stop the smog at its source.  And there's not enough energy to blow all that air.  But if the models are correct the sea levels will soon be rising.  I read that the oceans could be drained down by pumping water into deserts with saline aquifers.  Of course, then the aquifer would be even more saline, but there are aquifers in certain areas that are depleted and might serve as sinks for the ocean water.  We need more scientists to study which aquifers are appropriate and to work out all the details of how to do it best.  I think other occupations will be needed such as politicians because the choices of which aquifers are to be used is not just technical.  Its social too.

  5. I assume your joking?

Where do you think the water will go when you pour it down the drain?

Unfortunetly the sea has been rising at the same mean rate for the last 10,000 years regardless of temperature as the ice as the poles are remants of the last iceage and have just been melting slowly since. So regardless of climate change the sea will rise another 180mm over the next 100 years, though that is unlikely to flood the world as Al Gore shows in his film. His demonstration of a rising sea is based on all ice on the earth melting plus some which would take thousands of years to happen. So along as your floor level is a good half a metre or so above the 100 year high tide you will be fine for a few hundred years.

  6. OMG- You're genius -just call AL GORE- tell him  about it  -i'm sure, You will'be great Gore's or Obama's adviser ....

  7. I have anotherr idea. Get all the extra ocean water and drop it at a high altitude and the water will cool the earth, yes?

How about putting the water in a rocket and put it in orbit?

Seriously, how about enlarging dams and building new ones. We could keep water from reaching the ocean. In many natural basins, it would only be necessary to block the water from flowing out after the snow melts. I looked at Sierra Nevada photos and found many. The reason they are not build is that the water is not needed for farming but it could be used to make electricity.
