  1. The first answer is right, go to Barbizon (and not Barbazon) this is a very nice village close to Fontainebleau.

Around Fontainebleau you have nice spots like Bois-le-Roi and Samois as well. Don't miss the castle in Fontainebleau and the forest with the big rocks, it's very nice spot.

I'd recommend Vaux-le-Vicomte castle too. The park is fantastic and the visit of the castle is very interesting. It's close to Melun.

If you like Middle-Age castles there's a nice one in Blandy les Tours not far from Melun too.

Morêt sur Loing is a little town famous for its painters across the Loing River.

  2. The forest around fontainbleu is fantastic for kids - there are superb climbing routes specifically designed for children and colour coded in asending difficulty, eg white easy and suitable for kids, yellow petit difficile, orange, blue, red , black and white. There is a really good childrens area around la roche au sabots and le tete de chien (the dog's head)  which is like a natural rock sculpture of snoopy.  THese are both in the trois pignons area.

I think it will be about 40 mins south of sens/melun and you will be able to pick a map up from the local decathlon in the carrefour supermarket complex north of font.  Fontainebleu forrest is massive and the map will haveall the different climbing areas marked.  Parking is usually quite close by or a nice walking distance.  It is one of the most magical places on earth.  You can pick up the Fontainebleu climbing guide " Fontainebleau climbs by jo and francoise montchausee and Jacky Godoffe for about £16 and is well worth it to find places with climbs you and the kids can do.  Then you just need your trainers, doormat and courage!! its all free.... have a great time!

  3. Get yourselves through the Barbazon Forest, see if you can spot the wild boar and deer, but stay away from them. Go to Barbazon and see the house that hid the Allies airmen during the war. Nip through to Fontainbleau and see Napoleons Palace. There's loads to see and do, have a look at the war graves in the area. See if you can spot my name scratched on the balastrade round the lake in Fontainbleau Palace.
