  1. there are USB devices that do the same thing. they do not require installation and they work very reliably. Best Buy has one made by dynex that is priced at around $40.

  2. I am assuming you are talking about a wifi card for a laptop. If yes, Walmart, Bestbuy, Staples, or etc has them. They can cost anywhere from $30-$70. Most of the time you can pop it right into the slot on the side and it will work. This will get you wireless anywhere wireless is available

  3. I use a usb wireless adapter. at pcworld they are available but pc world has very BIG markup prices, if your from the UK, then i suggest http://www.novatech.co.uk i have used this reputable company for years and there prices are nowhere near pc worlds lol.

  4. It depends if you need it for a laptop or desktop. They run from $30 to $80

They should be available at any decent computer store.

If you have a laptop you put them into the pcmcia slot. If you have a desktop you put them in a pci slot

You will not be able to browse the internet right away unless you have a broadband modem and a wireless router.

If you go to a place that has wireless such as a public library, you will be able to connect right away.

You need internet->broadband modem->wireless router->your computer with a wireless card. If a place provides wireless access, they did the first 3 for you.

  5. all i know is that they mite habe them at radioshack and maybe they cost like 100 dollars but i dont know if u want u kan go ask

  6. Hiya  i have one but im not sure how much it cost but not that much i do not think. You slot them in at the side of your laptop and it pokes out a little.

  7. it will run you 30 to 50 dollars. I would buy a usb model, linksys is a good brand. after you buy one and install the software (it will include a cd), you will have to have a access point to get a signal. so you can't just plug it in and surf anywhere you have to be near a wireless router

  8. I paid £20.00 for mine [UK] they are inserted onto your motherboard, find an opening at the back of your pc for the end to stick out, where you attach the anntennae, you may have to remove a vertical piece of metal to find the opening, sorry if im not too clear, if you dont understand give to someone who does.  PC cards are much better than the network "dongles"

  9. Wal-Mart.  Linksys.  PCI (internal) (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... ) if it's a desktop computer, and if you're comfortable opening the case and installing a card, otherwise a USB type.  USB (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... ) or PCMCIA (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... ) type (you have no other choice) if it's a laptop.

And, as everyone says, you'll need internet service and a wireless router to get wireless service.

  10. Average cost: about $69.99

You slot them at the back of your computer (desktop PC)

    It's available at most stores.

You need to install the driver before using it. You also need an internet connection.

  11. I recently bought a 3G card from a 3 phone shop.

The actual card cost about £90, as well as the top-up.

But,if you go on contract (lasts about 18 months to my separatee), you get the card free and just pay a lump sum a month for a certain amount of internet usage.

If you don't want a cantract, you just have to buy a new top-up whenever the last one runs out.

I have a 7G top-up right now, and that cost £25. I've been using my computer for hours a day and it still hasn't run about. (:

As for being able to use it straight away; you'll have to install a software (takes around five minutes), then whenever you log on, simply click connect in the seperate software, and hey presto! You're browsing the internet with speed that I certainly didn't expect! (:

  12. They are fairly cheap now. No more than $100 and once they are plugged in (usually a PCI slot is required, and those are standard on most motherboards) then they will need to be installed. Once they are installed you need to connect to a wireless network and then you can surf the net!

  13. $40 would buy you a good card. Available everywhere.

You need to have an internet provider to browse the Net. Unless you are able and willing to piggyback from your neighbors (which would be bad, right?)

  14. You have to subscride first with a broadband supplier, they will give you a wireless modem you plug into the usb port...you can also subscribe to 'pay as you go' when you reach your download limit you take your top card to a shop and top up.

  15. what type of computer  - laptop or desktop

for a laptop they either come built in or an add on card - a laptop type card (pcmcia)  or a usb

for a desktop either usb or a card that is installed (pci)

its all the same radio receiver in different forms

if you are at home you will need a wireless router to share your signal and transmit it out

If you are away from home - there is a wireless signal and you are allowed in ( if there is a security code) say at an internet cafe then you are off the races

Standard wi fi uses the same frequencies as standard cordless phones

    the two work together fine

The standard wi fi now is called g

the older slower version is called b

    g is a souped up b

even the older b goes way faster than most people's high speed internet

There is a newer band called "n"

If you have a brand new Vista computer ( as opposed to XP) you may be more limited in buying newer / more expensive n cards

    Otherwise don't bother

Even the older b wi fi wireless is faster than most people's high speed internet connections

Big box stores have wireless routers and cards / usb adapters on sale all the time

Major brands are linksys( more premium)  and d-link (more retail with reasonable tech support)

All router brands and cards are pretty good - as long as the box says there is software inside - that will install on your version of windows

If you are buying a wireless card as well as a router it never hurts to get a matched brand

That way if you have trouble setting up the devices - then tech support cannot shunt you to the other manufacturer

Summary - most g wireless cards or routers are fine

On sale about $ 100 for a set of the two

Lastly wi fi's range is stated at 300 feet indoors and 1000 feet outdoors
