A wooden structure can never be truly dilapidated. Why?

  1. Dilapidated stems from "being destroyed by the throwing of stones at it." So if etymology underlies the question, that's the answer. But in common parlance it means worn out or down or fallen into decay. Woodworms and termites may work slowly, but eventually they get the job done - crash!
