A world championship win better for me than Ryder Cup says Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy, an important member of the European squad for the 2010 Ryder Cup has stated that he would rather win a World Golf Championship than the Ryder Cup. The 2010 Ryder Cup is set to take place at Celtic Manor in Wales from October 1st
to October 3rd. With so much Ryder Cup fever going on right now, it appears as if the whole world is excited for the event. With the best players from Europe and America competing against one another, the race for the Cup is bound to get hot. Rory,
however, seems to be the first person to say that he is not after the Ryder Cup after all.
Does this mean that McIlroy isn’t faithful to his team captain, Colin Montgomerie? His statement raises many heads and makes people question his commitment to his fellow team mates. Last year also, McIlroy made a big scene when he called the biennial event
‘an exhibition.’ Since then, it appears that Rory has elevated his opinions but it’s obvious that he has goals much greater than what he has achieved.
From what he says, it appears that Rory thinks he’ll be better off playing golf and competing in some other championship. Is Rory saying that he is too good for the Ryder Cup? Not very humble of you, Mr. McIlroy. Rory said that if he had the choice of scoring
the winning putt in Ryder cup or a major, he would pick a major any day. "At the end of the day, you're going to be remembered for what you achieve in an individual sport. When I was a kid growing up practicing, I never had a putt to win the Ryder Cup. I always
had a putt to win the Masters or the Open – it's just the way I feel," said McIlroy.
It is likely that people compare Rory and Tiger Woods because of Rory’s statement. Prior to the 2002 Ryder Cup, Woods also had said that he could think of a million reasons why a WGC victory comes above baiting Europe. Tiger made this statement while he
already had played in two Ryder Cup events. Rory, on the other hand, has never been through the Ryder experience and he still has to feel the Ryder Cup spirit. But from the looks of it, it doesn’t really seem like he wants to. He’s in the Ryder Cup team but
still not happy?
Paul Casey must be taken back by Rory’s statement as he was well deserving and very close to being in the European team. However, he wasn’t chosen as Montgomerie’s wild card. The pick that everyone thought would go to Casey ended up with Padraig Harrington.
Harrington remained the controversial picks out of all the three players. Rory added that after he played his first Masters, he never wanted to miss it again.
Some would think that McIlroy seems over confident. Even though, he doesn’t seem too eager for Ryder Cup, still he was very much excited to go against Woods. Rory even claimed that Woods wasn’t deserving of Captain Corey’s Picks. Meanwhile, McIlroy’s statement
also makes him to be seen as someone who is opposed to team work and cooperation. However, he did look cooperative with Graeme McDowell last September at Versailes when they both won three out of their four matches.
Maybe, it is the fact that Rory hasn’t played in a Ryder Cup before or he hasn’t been playing as a team for a while now, but his statement does arouse suspicion. It is hoped that he revives his team spirit before the 2010 Ryder Cup and finally enjoys his
first Ryder Cup experience.
