  1. You're on the right track but you're not all the way there yet.  Reading books in the genre you have an interest in writing is good.  It helps you see what kind of books have been published in the past, shows you how the stories are structured, and helps you become more familiar with that genre's particular style.  But if you want to learn to write you have to write.  Just like anything else writing takes practice.  Even if you just start out by keeping a journal the key is to write.  Try your hand at a few short stories.  Just write, write, write.  And read, read, read.

You mention looking up new words and that's great but it's not going to help much just to understand the definition you have to know the proper way to use the words.  And honestly there are times that the 5-cent word gets the point across better than the $50 word.

  2. Not to be rude, but are you sure about that? Your capitalization, punctuation, and structure are a bit lacking.

And from personal experience, writing well is only one aspect. You need some real life experience as well.

  3. I agree with some of the answers given already. Reading is essential but it is not a mythical power source that will give you amazing writing skills whilst you sleep. (As stated before). It is important to read and to think, to dream, to enjoy writing. So what if you are no good at it. It takes time and energy that you may or may not have but with practice you can be a published author in time. That might be a long time or a relatively short time. Do not expect to magically obtain the skill to write but rather be open to learn from elders or people with experience. Good Luck!

  4. Reading is certainly necessary to being a good writer, but those skills don't just show up magically in your sleep.

You need to practice. Write as often as you can and write for a critical audience. Write with the aim of polishing your style. Find a trusted group of serious writers, or get your English teacher on your side, and ask for brutal honesty.

Write for your school paper, put effort into your academic writing, get all the writing in that you can.

Like I said, reading is great, but writers write.
