A young Japanese guy is looking to rent a room in Vancouver downtown, he is here for 1 year, any tips?

Does he have a car, if he doesn't, then he'll need to live close to where he works or goes to school. And he'll want to be on a transit line, bus route or skytrain. There are a lot of basement suites in South Vancouver which will include utilities and cable, and are sometimes in new houses. These might be good for him becuase there aren't usually leases attached to those. Hope that's helpful. :-)
