How long with 2 AA batteries last in the Kodak Z712? And how long with the non-rechargeable lithium last? Are we talking hundreds of pictures? Or not that much?

  1. How long they last depends on a number of factors even for a specific camera.

There's two issues that largely affect the number of pictures you can take with a set of batteries.

    1) Using the flash a lot is a BIG factor in reducing  battery life.  A rough estimate is that using the flash on every picture, or almost every picture, reduces the number of shots per battery set by a third to half.

    2) How much you use the LCD view screen.  Turning the screen on just before a shot, then turning it off immediately after previewing it (rather than leaving it on constantly), will do a lot for increasing the number of photos from batteries.

If you take a lot of (non-flash) pictures outdoors, and minimize the turn-on time of the LCD view screen, then a set of decent non-rechargeable lithium cells most likely will give you well over a hundred pictures, perhaps up to 200 or more.

On the other hand, I agree with "fhotoace" that rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are the way to go in digital cameras that can use them. They've saved me a lot of money not spent on disposable batters.  If I'm taking a LOT of photos in an area near a power outlet, I often have three sets of batteries under way: one set fully charged, one set in the charger, and  one set in the camera.  If I'm on a day trip with minimal baggage and expect to take few to a moderate number of pictures , I have a spare fully charged set in the camera bag AND in the camera.  It works well for me...

  2. I would not do regular AA batteries by any means but I do really like the AA lithium titanium ones.  They last way longer but time wise it all depends really.  As long as you not using video mode and just taking pictures and making sure to turn it off when not using, you should be able to get a couple hundred shots.

  3. Batteries are not rated by how long they last, but the number of photos you can get from one set of batteries (or charge on rechargeable batteries)

Since your camera is optimized for NiMH AA's, I suggest you buy four and a charger and use them.

If you are taking hundreds of photos in a studio or controlled environment, you may want to look into an AC adapter.

That said, good energy management is the key to getting the most from your batteries, whatever kind they are.
