Netherlands Captain Peter Borren won the toss and elected to field first, as the wicket at Mohali was good for the bowlers in the first hour of the game. However, the Proteas kept their wickets intact, which allowed them to post a massive total in the end.
Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith started the innings steadily for their team and survived the first few overs. However, Smith wasn’t able to keep his calm, and threw his wicket away after scoring just 20 runs off 32 balls.
The first-drop Jacques Kallis was unlucky to be dismissed, as he got a faint edge to a wide ball down the leg-side. The class batsman was sent back to the pavilion after just adding two runs to the total.
South Africa were 58 for the loss of two wickets, when AB de Villiers joined Amla at the crease. The pair played exceptional cricket and put together a terrific 221 run partnership for the third wicket.
Amla played risk free cricket and brought up his first ton in World Cups. He was dismissed after scoring 113 runs from 130 balls, in an attempt to lift the run-rate.
The stand-out performer for the Proteas was AB de Villiers, who eased the pressure on Amla. The flamboyant batsman played a blistering innings of 134 runs from just 98 balls. He was unfortunate to be run-out in the death overs, but he had done the job for
his team by then.
