The Proteas came to England with an ambition of becoming the world’s number one ranked Test team by dismantling the Poms. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GC-Smith-c1473 and company achieved their goal, winning the series by a comprehensive margin of 2-0.
After Mark Boucher’s career-ending injury before the first Test, de Villiers was handed over the wicketkeeping duties, to go with his responsibility of holding the South African middle-order together.
The stylish batsman could only get four innings to display his skills during the Test series, scoring 161 runs at an average of 40.25 runs per innings. The visitors’ top-order did exceedingly well on the tour, taking the pressure
off de Villiers’ shoulders.
The right-hander played a brilliant knock in the final ODI at Nottingham, coming to his side's rescue in a precarious situation and leading them to victory.
De Villiers expressed after the match that he did not get enough opportunities in the Test series but he is happy to have contributed in the final ODI.
The captain said, "It's been a fairly quiet summer for me but a very enjoyable one. I felt I was in good form right throughout the Test series and today; it's always nice to play under pressure."
After winning the Tests, South Africa did not want to hamper their morale by losing in the 50-over format. The signs were ominous for the Proteas after their poor showings in the third and the fourth ODI; however, de Villiers is delighted

"It was a very important series for us and we didn't want to go down here," he added. "It's always hard to play here, England know the conditions really well. We had a couple of ODIs in row where we just weren't up for it and didn't
play good cricket. But the fact we came back here and played good cricket, I'm very proud of the boys."
