http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Allan-Robert-Border-c43726 de Villiers, the South African limited-overs skipper, has admitted that keeping wickets is taking a toll on his body but expressed that he will continue to do the job in the longer format of the game, even if he has to curtail the length of his international career.
After South Africa’s disastrous ouster from the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GC-Smith-c1473, who continues to lead the Proteas in Test cricket.
Before the start of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MV-Boucher-c2048, was tragically ruled out as a dislodged bail struck his eye. As a result, De Villiers was asked to keep wickets in the five-day format.
Additional responsibilities have affected the 28-year-old cricketer’s fitness, who had to take rest during the recently-concluded T20 series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Faf-du-Plessis-c1427 leading the team in De Villiers’ absence.
However, the South African selectors have decided to play http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Quinton-de-Kock-c82885 in the One Day International (ODI) series against the Black Caps, which means that De Villiers can now feel a bit relieved.
The middle-order batsman has expressed that keeping wickets, leading the team and focussing on batting at the same time was an extremely difficult job. He thinks that he will be a bit relieved to hand over the keeping gloves to De Kock.
"I have always felt a bit rushed trying to captain the side and keep wicket," said the South African limited-overs captain. "I will probably stand at mid-off and be able to communicate with my bowlers a lot better as well as get a better perspective of the game."
However, De Villiers does not have a problem keeping wickets in Test cricket as he is not the captain in that format of the game.
"I don't believe there is too much on my plate; I really enjoy the captaincy and batting and keeping. It's what I am going to do," he added, "If I miss out on a year of my career, so be it."
