The vice-captain of South Africa, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AB-de-Villiers-c887, has said that pitches would play a crucial role in their upcoming home Test series against Sri Lanka, starting in Centurion on Thursday, December 15, 2011.
De Villiers said that a good cricketing wicket complimented by some good cricket from South African players would make them a formidable side against the Lankans, fresh from a clean sweep at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033.
"If we get a good cricket wicket and we play good cricket, then they're not going to stop us," said De Villiers while talking to the media reporters during a news conference at Centurion on Monday.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 has not won a Test against Proteas on South African soil in past seven attempts and the de Villiers, the 27-year-old wicketkeeper batsman, was not wary of a depleted Sri Lankan squad.
While talking to the media reporters on Tuesday, de Villiers said that the Islanders pose a little threat for them.
On the other hand, the Proteas have also been struggling for a Test series win at home over the past three years. Their last Test series win at home was against a low-ranked http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 side in 2008-09, and the one-day skipper of South Africa reckoned it
was an ideal opportunity for them to break their winless run at home.
De Villiers conceded the side lacked consistency over the past couple of years. He urged the side to play consistent cricket if they are to end the astonishing gap of three winless seasons at home.
"We need to get back to playing consistently good cricket for longer periods, that's probably the reason we haven't won at home for a while. We want to do that for the whole series against Sri Lanka," said De Villiers.
"My feeling is that test cricket is all about momentum and you get waves that are up and down. Whoever maximises their opportunities when they're on top, when they have the opposition on the ropes, will win. You have to finish off the opposition, be aggressive,
whether you're batting or bowling," he added further.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 will play Sri Lanka in three Tests and five One Day Internationals during their seven-week long tour.
