Question:

ABD Pads in a First Aid Kit?

I have an advanced Level 1 First Aid Kit (if I added a Sphignomanometer(sp?) and a stethoscope, it would be level 2) and I was jsut wondering, how many ABD Pads should I put in it because it is home made and I currently have Topper Sponges (4). Also, if I put in a certain amount of ABD pads in the kit, could i get by with 2 or 3 toppers? IS an ABD Pad a Trauma DRessing? Do I need a trauma dressing? Sorry for all the questions! :)

  1. You can put one abd pad.  Most BLS kits have only one.

  2. See my reply to your other question as well-

I carry 6 5"x9" ABD pads in my personal jump bag, and that's what most agencies around here stock in their bags, along with 10-15 extras in the cabinets.

fivemgmorphine is likely confusing 5"x9" ABD pads with the much larger 10"x30" Multi-Trauma Dressings, of which most services only carry 1 or 2 in their main bag, plus only 2-3 extras in the cabinet. I carry 2 only because I live in a rural farming area where I'm more likely to need more than one.

  3. I would only put one ABD in the kit. If someone had a wound large enough to necessitate an ABD chances are you would take them to the emergency room for treatment and not treat them at home.
