  1. It mainly teaches letters and sounds.  If I were you, I would go ahead and buy K5 and just move through it very slowly.  I looked at both programs at a curriculum fair, and it didn't appear that K4 was worth the money as much of it is repeated in K5.

I am going to start my daughter in Abeka K5 this fall.  She'll be 4 and a half, and we'll just move through however slowly or quickly she needs to.

  2. It doesn't teach them the three letter words too much in depthg, mainly focuses on the sounds and letters. Theres a fantastic book that thought me to read, and i plan on using it with my children. I can't remeber the author, but its called "Teach your chidlren to read in 100 easy lessons". I starts with the basics(sounds, letters, etc.)and continues that by the end of the course the child is able to read 1-2 page stories. its a fantastic book that covers everything to get them ready to go. i used this book when i was about 3-4, and I became an extreemly voracious reader. hope this answer helps!
