Do you really have to close your eyes when doing the MRI?

What happens if you kept them open?

Its probably just a bunch of bright lights that can hurt your eyes. Ive had a spinal one done before, with the nice old school machine. I just closed my eyes and tried to do my Best to relax. Its the most uncomfortable thing in the world though... not fun at all.

The only reasons we tell you to keep your eyes closed is :

        1) Some people feel more confined if the lay there and look at the top of the machine.

        2) When you look around you have a tendency to move you head slightly which if we are looking at your head is too much movement.

        3) When we center you to the machine some scanners use pointing lasers.  They turn off as soon as the center mark has been set and are on the outside of the scanner.  

Once you are in the scanner there is nothing to look at but the top of the machine.  My GE scanner has two soft light bars in the top of it so its not dark and the Philips scanner has two indirect light on the back of the scanner, but other that that there are normally no other lights and no moving parts.  Occasionally some places do MRI scans that require you to follow special instructions or to watch a tv type screen to but these are special scans to see which part of the brain react to particular stimuli and not what is normally ordered.  So what happens if you open your eyes in a MRI scanner, absolutely nothing, some people just feel a little scared.

well i'm 13 and i had to get an MRI and my doctor said keep my eyes close because there is some super duper laser light that some how can see through your skin and see inside your head i dont know how it works but it does i saw the computer after tipower fullretty wicked! now i don't know if that light thing can do any harm but they say its pretty powerful

well if you get an MRI act like you are falling asleep because they dont usually last long maybe about 5-15 minutes mine was about 10..also they have a mic and can hear every single sound you make so be careful what you say or what noise may exit your body..just saying
