My AC runs several seconds before the fan kicks on. Is this normal? I have a Rheem unit/ Split. The unit was just serviced and wasn't low in coolant, everything seemed okay. It doesn't freeze up. It kicks on and off sometimes within minutes though?? Please help!

  1. This is a little way to make the efficiency a little higher on the unit . The compressor comes on and the coil chills down after a few seconds. Then the blower comes on,right next to a cold coil.If it wasn't this way,the blower would be working before the coil was cold enough and when the coil was cold enough.

The way yours is, you don't have to feel the air across a coil that's not pulled down to temp.(chilled)No energy is wasted across the coil.Hope that helped.

  2. yeah thats normal

  3. It is not unusual for the fan to start up before the AC compressor kicks in.  There are messages going back and forth between those parts, plus the thermostat.  In some units, a fan will run continuously until the thermostat tells the compressor to come of because the desired temp has been reached.

For rapid on and off problems, I would look more to the thermostat than the unit itself.  Could be that the stat is getting some air movement that tells it to turn the unit on.  I would check for sources of hotter air than the room temp actually is-- a breeze from a loose fitting or slightly open window or door, an appliance of some sort, a light that produces heat too close to the stat, that sort of thing.  In rare cases, a switch goes haywire, but if your unit was recently serviced that would be remote.

  4. Some air conditioners are installed with a fan delay, or condenser fan pressure switch. This delay is in case the head pressure does not build quick enough to protect the compressor. Cold weather can cause a longer delay of trying to run. Actually a desirable feature. Hope this helps.

  5. ITS CALLED A FAN DELAY,VERY COMMON,MADE THAT WAY
