AC Milan's Silva ruled out for six months with knee injury
Latest reports coming out of Italy suggest that AC Milan have lost star defender Thiago Silva to a knee injury. Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri played the centre-back in his team’s final Champions League group game against Ajax in midweek, which was in effect
a dead rubber since Milan had already qualified for the next round, but the move backfired.
The Brazilian has reportedly suffered a damaged knee. An official press release from Milan states that, “AC Milan Medical Director Dr. Gianluca Melegati has announced that Thiago Silva has undergone a MRI this morning, and was diagnosed with a lesion to
the medial meniscus in his right knee.” The statement further went on to say that Silva will now travel to Rio de Janeiro, along with Milan’s medical team, to consult a doctor with the Brazilian national side.
Thiago Silva and the ageing Alessandro Nesta make up one of the most highly rated centre-back pairings in the world, and Silva’s injury will be a huge loss to the Rossoneri. AC Milan doesn’t have the personnel required to replace the Brazilian international,
as the likes of Mario Yepes and Sokratis Papastathopoulos are mediocre at best. The injury will come as a huge blow to Allegri’s Champions League ambitions.
It’s no secret that Nesta owing more to his age rather than inability, suffers in the absence of the Brazilian, and Massimiliano Allegri will have nightmares regarding his decision to start Thiago Silva for a game that was a mere run out for his fringe players.
AC Milan will have to splash some cash in the winter transfer market and look for a quality centre-back to make up for the loss of the Brazilian. Speculations are rife in the media that Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Benfica’s David Luiz are the two names
that have crossed the mind of AC Milan President Adriano Galliani. While Daniel Agger might be a feasible option, David Luiz will cost the Rossoneri a fortune, as interest in his services is high.
Furthermore, AC Milan has also lost French midfielder Mathieu Flamini to yet another knee injury. However, Flamini’s injury is less serious and he should be back in action for the first team action in three to four weeks.
