AC Milan’s formation following Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho’s arrival (Part 2)
One of the major reasons behind the diamond suiting AC Milan’s style of play would be 20-year old Pato. With Ibrahimovic and Robinho both being brought in, many believe that Pato would be the one on the bench. That would be a dumb thing to do as the Brazilian has recently found his top form and has become a huge threat for any defence.
It would be very disappointing to see the Brazilian striker with fewer opportunities owing to the emergence of competition. Many still believe Ronaldinho would also be on the bench but the former Barca man has established himself as a true play maker for the team. With a diamond formation installed at San Siro, Ronaldinho would feature in the attacking mid role, leaving the Right wing position solely for Pato.
Doing so, Milan would be having two of the fastest and greatest goal scoring wing forwards on either wings, with arguably the greatest in box finisher up front. Add one of the greatest play makers and scorers just behind the three forwards in the form of Ronaldinho and its Check-mate for any defence. Such a formation would provide goals galore to the Italians giants this season.
With Ronaldinho reaching his full form, it’s easy to see the player helping out Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini in the mid-field. The player has rejuvenated his somewhat dying career and has the motivation to tract back and help out his midfield colleagues. Milan also don’t lack quality at the back with Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva providing the much needed anchor in the mid, Luca Antonini and Gianluca Zambrotta would be featuring as full backs. Both Pirlo and Ambrosini have the ability to be excellent in defensive situations. However, extra support may well be required.
Robinho can never be considered a reliable box to box winger while Pato can be helpful. This would mean that Ronaldinho would be needed to track back and help out the midfielders. The player’s fitness and motivation would be needed to take this double role and with Pirlo being an awesome outlet passer, Milan would prove a huge threat on counters. Ronaldinho has always been a master of beginning attacks from the centre of the field.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho joining Pato, Ronaldinho, Filippo Inzaghi and the emerging Nnamdi Oduamadi, Milan can easily say they employ the best attack in Europe. Their attack surpasses even that of Barcelona’s, who have recently signed Spanish sensation David Villa.
All they need is to utilize such an attacking force in the best possible way to their own advantage. It would be beneficial for Milan to reconstruct the 4-3-3 into a 4-2-1-2-1 or a 4-2-1-3. The diamond formation with Pato and Robinho on wings, Ibrahimovic as lone striker and Ronaldinho as attacking midfielder would give Milan a deadly attack, catering for the midfield and defence as well.
Traditionally, employing three central midfielders in the form of Seedorf, Pirlo and Ambrosini would be unwise as they would not be utilizing the full attacking potential. By installing four attackers up front using the diamond, Milan would not only be adding youth but experience, fitness, pace and a lot more firepower to the squad.
In my opinion, employing the diamond would suit them the most to utilize their new signings to their squad.
