  1. I would not install anything but the factory recommended parts.

If it wasn't on the unit when new, don't fool with it.

    Compressor failure is extremely costly!!!!!!!!!

  2. ya other wise you will be replaceing the starter every yr,

  3. Yeh it is less stress on the motor, and means you can run smaller diameter cables as the inrush current is controlled.. A soft starter basically allows you to control the ramp up time and current charateristic of the motor..(they can get expensive thou and can be difficult to callibrate..i had one blowup last night at work from incorrect settings that didn';t make it fail safe...) And they can also be used as a good safety device aswell for your motor...Just make sure you do some homework when buying one and get someone with an electrical background to set it for you..

  4. It can't hurt, from what I know.

  5. Soft starters do work, they will allow a easier start by limiting the initial inrush current to the motor.  The power is slowly brought up to full level over a time period of several  milli seconds.  This will lower your power consumption, but they aren't cheap.   It also will be easier on the equipment.  Do some research on different types.
