Question:

AC unit fan won't turn - throws breaker in fuse box?

Hello. I have two ac/heat units. One for our upstairs and one for our main floor. We can feel cold air coming out of the main floor unit - however it does not "blow" out and the fan in the outside unit does not turn. The breaker in the basement breaker box does throw to the "off" position. I do have somebody coming out tommorow afternoon - but I'm afraid of what they might say or charge! Can anybody give me any tips on what to look for? Thanks!

  1. If it's throwing(tripping) the breaker it sounds like the fan is the culprit. Not knowing the age it could be that the fan needs replacing as it's not turning freely and causing the overload which in turn it tripping the fuse.

  2. sounds like a direct short be prepared $

  3. sounds as if the fan moter has went out... it must have rusted tight!!!! check with your warrenty!!! how old is the unit??? might be better off getting a new one since everything is there and all you need is a compressor then!!! probally about $500 to $1000 is my guess!!

  4. You might not want to hear this, but the compressor in your condensing unit outside probably is burnt out. be prepare for costs around $2,500 to repair.

If this is the problem.  Only let them change out the condensing unit. You should not need a completely new A/C system $4,000.  They will try and sell you a complete new system.
