ACC schools link spending with success
A recent report from the Associated Press directly links spending to success in the Atlantic Coast Conference, specifically football.
The Associated Press recently reviewed the latest gender-equity spending reports that were filed by all 12 ACC schools and determined that those schools that spend the most money generally see the most success on the field.
NCAA schools are forced to file a report every year indicating how much they spent on each sport in order to ensure that they are spending an even amount of money on both male and female programs. The Associated Press was able to take these numbers from
2005, when the conference expanded to 12 teams, and determine whether spending was linked to program success.
The report found that the four schools that spent the most on football, the Miami Hurricane, Clemson Tigers, the Boston College Eagles and the Virginia Tech Hokies, had achieved the most success over the past five season. Combined, the schools have managed
to qualify for six ACC championships and two conference titles, which were both won by Virginia Tech.
“Number one, if you’re going to have good people, you’re going to have to pay them. That’s a factor in there,” Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer told the Associated Press. “Then I think how you run your program. Kids get affected by the atmosphere they’re
in and I think money affects that. And then I think certainly the facilities you have. That affects recruiting, it affects how kids feel about themselves, all that, and that takes money. I think how much you spend does directly affect your possibility for
success.”
Perhaps the most interesting findings in the report surround the amount of money ACC schools make on their football programs. In a conference that is known for its prowess on the basketball court, nearly every school generated the most profit from their
football program.
