ACT Canberra Strikers demolish Victoria Vipers by 4-0: Women Hockey Recap
ACT Canberra Strikers snatched the fifth position by defeating Victoria Vipers with 4-0 in Women’s Australian Hockey League (AHL), which was played in Darwin.
The result was quite unexpected, as no one could imagine that Canberra Strikers will be able to beat the Victoria Vipers, but it happened. Canberra Strikers defeated them in a comprehensive way and it is even more disappointing for the Victoria Vipers due
to the reason that they had remained at the top spot on points table in initial rounds of the tournament.
In the first half, it seemed reasonably a balanced fight as both of the teams had their chances, but neither of them managed to convert those chances in to goals. However, Victoria Vipers had their best chance in early minutes of the first half, but remained
goal-less. The national team player, Renee Trost made a great move inside the circle and passed the ball, but Claire Messent could not manage to cover the ground and as a result could not pick the ball which went wide without any deflection.
The first remained very tight between the opponents. In fact Victoria Vipers were seemed more energetic in the initial moments of first half, but remained goal-less at the end. ACT Canberra Strikers broke the dead-lock just two minutes before the end of
first half when Courtney McGowan guided the ball towards Vipers’ net. The score was 1-0 to Strikers at the end of first half.
Second half clearly belonged to Canberra Strikers in which they made three strikes. The Strikers persistently continued to penetrate in Vipers’ circle due to which they were awarded a number of penalty-corners and their next two goals also came on the penalty-corners.
In 44th minute Strikers succeeded in doubling their lead when Stacey Michelsen converted one of the penalty-corners in their second goal. It did not take more than five minutes after the second goal when Katie Glynn made the third one for the Strikers
in 49th minute.
At this stage, it looked like all of the damage has been done to the Vipers but the Strikers did not let them free. They continued to put more and more pressure on the Vipers and as a result they once again came across another chance, just twenty minutes
before the end of the game. Katie Glynn scored fourth and the final goal of the match in 70th minute.
