ACT cruise past NSW Waratahs in Australian Hockey League
The Men’s hockey team of Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has emerged victorious over New South Wales (NSW) Waratahs by two goals 5-3 in the cross border grudge match of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) being contested at the Sydney Olympic Park on August
7.
The players from ACT and NSW Waratahs opened the game quite impressively, as it was the day of former one that scored five goals against the three of their rivals. The two squads showed wonderful ball movement in the beginning. Interestingly, the two sides
exchanged hard passes in a bid to dominate the field.
In the 4th minute of the match, ACT, which is also known as the famous Canberra Lakers, team earned a short corner but it was denied by Daniel McPherson – the NSW custodian. In the very next minute, ACT received second short corner and this time
Woeter Hermkens marked a reverse drag flicking shot which moved absolutely into the goalposts. It was the point which put ACT ahead at the scoreboard.
The intensity of the match had increased and the two squads played an end-to-end match. Both created chances against each other but neither ACT doubled the tally nor did NSW level the results. The NSW defenders used to play outside the 25-yard D line in
order to reduce the chances for short corners.
In the 17th minute of the match, Matt Wark committed a mistake that awarded second short corner to ACT. Once again Woeter Hermkens tested his skills and did not disappoint his team. He slammed a powerful shot in the right corner of the goal and
doubled the tally before going into the second half.
In order to make a comeback into the game, the NSW players shifted their focus from defence to offence. Their struggle to make a comeback into the game paid off when they started a passing game. Josh Miller received a pass from Matt Wark from full-back position
and forwarded the ball to Adam Imer. He was standing in front of the ACT goal and chipped in a low-flying shot into the goal. At the half-time, NSW was trailing by a single goal, 2-1.
At the start of the second half, NSW started fast and aggressive game in order to make a comeback into the match. Though the NSW team held the ball mostly under their sticks but failed to impress opposite side. They accomplished plenty of attacks but could
only score two goals against the three of ACT.
In the later time, Glenn Turner, Ian Davidson and Daniel Borrett scored one goal each for ACT and tightened their grip over the match. From the other side, Matthew Buturini scored a couple of goals in the 63rd and 64th minutes but lost
the game at 5-3.
