AE-EF lens converter? Is there such a thing, that lets you use one type of lens mount, with another. Read.?

I have many lenses for my old Canon AE-1. Which has a bayonet, AE mount. But I just recently purchased a Canon Rebel T2 35mm, and I am wondering if there is something that allows me to use my AE lenses, with my new T2, which has a EF mount.

So, is there such a thing, that allows me to convert my mount type on my new camera, to let me use my old lenses? Possibly a lens type attachment?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Yes you can get adaptors.  I am not sure what one will work or if any will.  But you can check it out.

  2. Yes, you can get an FD to EF converter.  Your best place to look is eBay.

Canon made on, but it doesn't work for all FD mount lenses, mainly it worked just for the super telephotos.  As would be expected, you don't have auto-focus and you have to work in stopped down metering.  Since you set your aperture when you are metering, your viewfinder gets very dim as you close down the aperture.  However, optically the Canon one is the best as it allows for focus at infinity.  If you find one of these on eBay, it will probably cost around $1,000.  They are very rare.

There are other adapters that are MUCH cheaper.  As you would expect, the manual focus only and stopped down metering applies to those as well.  However, they usually don't have any optics to correct for infinity focus, so you lose the ability to focus at infinity.  The glass is also of questionable quality.

If you can't get one of the Canon ones, you're best bet is one made by Elephoto.  You'll see this mentioned in lots of pages about FD lenses on EOS bodies.

Truthfully, you're probably much better off getting EF lenses.  Unfortunately, there just isn't much of a market for the FD system anymore.  You could try selling on eBay or Craigslist, as you'll get the most money for them there.

  3. Canon basically abandoned the FD mount of your AE-1 when it designed the improved EF electronic coupling mount for the autofocus 35mm and digital slr's.  You can find an adaptor, but you won't get autofocus, and may also have problems manually focusing as well.  You won't get meter-coupling, nor autoaperture.

There are a couple of FD to EF adaptors.

  4. Way back in time, when Canon switch from FD mount to EF mount, I remember that Canon has a FD/EF converter.

However, I don't know whether Canon still offer this converter anymore. If they do, it will be a special order item or check out eBay or Craiglist.
