AECF or IT in the Navy

I am schedule to ship out on 20080915 and right now I chose IT for my rate. I have been reading out the rate along with AECF and wanted to know which one would be better for me. I did qualify for both rates but chose IT because I love computers and I heard it transfers or to civilian jobs. Now I hear the AECF is a great rate and if I get ET that they work with computers alot too and FC is a good rate also. I am looking for a challenge and thats where I hear AECF is good one and it pays off. And I did hear that you can be a IT but don't really work with computers. I just want to be in a rate where if I was to get out then my time in the Navy would be able to set me up with a decent job and if I chose to stay the whole 20 I wont regret it. And also I would be looking to get a degree while I am in too. Would any rate give me more time to work on my degree than the other. Sorry for the long post. Any information would be great.

  1. Yikes, I had to research wft AECF stood for !!  I guess it's my life as a brown-shoe.

I would agree with the Chief (as all officers should)... IT is mostly deskwork.  I'd pick AECF.

  2. You might have to enlist for a longer period of time for AECF than IT.  It used to be 6 years for AECF.

IT sounds s**y, but the odds are you're just going to get stuck working in a communications center.  It's not a job I'd want based on my 22 years experience.

Now, "twiggets" have, IMHO, a much better job in the navy.  More employment opportunities too.
