hey guys... so I'm a little concern about the job i would be doing in the Air Force. Last friday i went over to meps and when i met with the job counselor he made me pick 4 jobs. Out of those jobs i picked , he said that in one week or two they will let me know my ship out day and the job i would be doing. i am really into the medical field and 2 of the jobs i picked were medical. so MY QUESTION IS----> if they call me and tell me i would be doing one of the other 2 jobs that are good as well but are not medical. can i tell them i want to wait for an oppenning on the cardiopulmonary laboratory?????? or the other one which is diagnostic imaging???? CAN I DO THAT????? . because today when i saw this marine sargeant whos a very good friend of the family , he told me .... even tho i did the swearing and sign the contract he said that the last swearing is the one that counts .... which is the day i ship out.. and he also said that i am the one thats suppost to tell them what i want!!!?? is this true.... can i tell them in case they dont give me the job i want THAT I WOULD WAIT until there is an openning?????????

  1. The problem with this Ask/Answer site is that people will vote based the answer they want to hear even it that answer is wrong or not truthful.

Recruiters will do that all the time - only give you the information that you want to hear.  They are afraid of giving you information that you don't want to hear in fear of losing you as an enlistment contract.

Hey, your probably a nice person but you are joining the military for the wrong reason -  Being completely honest and to the point......

First off, nothing is guaranteed.  If you want to become a Cardiopulmonary Lab Tech, go to school on your own.  Don't go into the Air Force or any other Military Service.

Your recruiter should be telling you how you can get the education on how to become what you want instead of telling you that you can get a guaranteed job.

How many Cardiopulmonary Lab Techs are there in the Air Force?   Probably not that many.  NO, you cannot wait for that job to come available. It doesn't work that way.

The Marine Recruiter is right - If you DEP, you have no real obligation to go active duty however why are you joining the military?

People should join the military because of PRIDE of Service.

To carry on a Family Tradition.

Because they know that the Military can offer Educational Benefits that can get them to where you want to go.

Why should the AF or any other branch offer you anything when all you will most likely do is stay for 4 years and leave?

What makes you so special that the AF should give you that job?

What are your qualifications over everyone else in the nation that wants that type of position?

Your looking at the wrong company to be hired by.

If you want to be a Pulmonary Tech or whatever other Medical job.  Use your educational benefits while you are in the military then finish up after you get out of the AF by using the GI Bill.

Here's another thing to consider .....  Although unlikely, it could very well happen..... You get that job and you start your training for that job but you fail the schooling.  Then what are you going to do?  Or... what if you get into that job and you come to the conclusion that you hate it?  That scenario could very well happen.

Frankly, I think your recruiter did a poor job.

  2. Your already in the USAF DEP. You have already chosen 4 available programs and will be guaranteed one of them.

The first swear in counts. That puts you in the delayed entry program.

You can RTS (Refuse to Ship) meaning go to USAF basic and will be DEP discharged.

The USAF is a smaller service and I am not sure how they would respond to your demands for a particular program guarantee.

  3. Yes, you can wait for a class spot to open up and you need to talk to the recruiter and get the job you want GTEP, that is it will be guaranteed on the contract.  IT SHOULD SAY IT SPECIFICALLY, no open general or bull c**p, It will say a certain Air Force Specialty Code, like 4B0X1 or 4N0X1, something like that and have the job title next to it and that's it.  all those other job shouldn't be anywhere on the contract.
