Reports from Amsterdam Arena suggest that Ajax Amsterdam have offered their goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg, a contract extension that would bind him with the club until the summer of 2015. The 28-year-old goalkeeper’s current contract with the club runs
out in June, 2012.
Earlier reports suggested that the highly-rated gloves man wants to leave his current club at the end of the season as he wants to take the next step in his career. However, it seems that a better offer could persuade Stekelenburg to stay at Amsterdam Arena
for the next couple of seasons.
Stekelenburg’s agent, Rob Jansen, has confirmed that the club from Amsterdam have informed him about the contract extension. According to Jansen, he and his client are taking the offer from Ajax under consideration.
Jansen said, “We want to hear from Ajax that they still want him. With Ajax, we talk more naturally because the club has been a good employer, we are civilized with each other, and that’s worth something in this world.”
However, Jansen also admitted that his client is still looking to move to a more competitive league. Jansen added, “But it is clear that Maarten would like to move to a bigger competition if a club is appealing.”
Rumours were rife that the Dutch International would be replacing his fellow compatriot, Edwin van der Sar, at Old Trafford at the end of the season. Legendary Van der Sar has already announced his decision to retire at the end of the ongoing season. However,
Manchester United have not made contact with Ajax or Stekelenburg’s agent just yet.
Moreover, the 28-year-old gloves man was also heavily linked with Juventus FC, Inter Milan, AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 and Atletico Madrid, as all the aforementioned clubs are eager to take his signature in the upcoming summer transfer market. Latest reports reveal that Schalke
04 have also joined the race to sign Stekelenburg, as Bayern Munich look set to sign their goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424.
Jansen mooted all speculations by stating that none of these clubs made contact with the the Dutch International.
With a host of top European clubs taking keen interest in Stekelenburg’s signature, it was obvious that Ajax management would offer Stekelenburg a contract extension. However, only time will tell whether the Dutch international shot-stopper pens down a new
deal with the Amsterdammers or makes a move away at the end of the season.
