AFC Ajax’s Frank de Boer: We failed to clinch a point with the chances we created – UCL News
Following the 3-0 loss at the hands of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage encounter, Ajax Amsterdam head coach, Frank de Boer, has revealed that his side failed to secure a lone point with the chances they created.
With the Madrid giants leading 1-0 at the half-hour mark, Nicolas Lodeiro headed home the equaliser. However, the lines-man raised his flag right after the ball hit the back of the net.
Moments later, Vurnon Anita’s long-range effort took a deflection off http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Miralem-Sulejmani-c25985 and found the back of the net, but the lines-man ruled out the strike yet again.
The replays, however, clearly showed that the lines-man was wrong on both the occasions, as both players were onside.
De Boer admitted that the loss is a huge blow and openly revealed that the result would have been totally different had those two goals been allowed.
“That is a bitter taste because with a 2-2 half-time score there wasn't any problem at all. Madrid weren't really determined to win this match. I can't blame the referee [Portuguese http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-c23383 De Sousa] for his decisions as he follows his linesman, who should
retire in my opinion. But we should only blame ourselves as we failed to clinch a point with the chances we created”, De Boer said.
The Amsterdammers' voyage in Europe’s primary club competition ended in a dramatic manner, as they were set to make progression to the next phase of the competition.
The 3-0 loss to the Madrid coupled with Olympique Lyonnais' thumping 7-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb forced the Amsterdam giants out of the competition.
“On this stage a 7-1 away win is an exception. Maybe I'm naïve when I think it normally doesn't work like this, but if Zagreb gave the match away they should be punished”, De Boer concluded while talking to the media.
Ajax will now continue their European voyage in Europa League after the winter break.
