AFC Ajax’s Gregory van der Weil believes Eredivisie title is more important than KNVB beker Cup
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede defeated Ajax Amsterdam 3-2 in the KNVB beker Cup final at the De Kuip Stadion on Sunday, May 8. Ajax right-back, Gregory van der Wiel, has now stated that the Eredivisie title is more important to win than the Dutch cup.
The outfit from Amsterdam looked set to win another Dutch cup after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Demy-de-Zeeuw-c10825 and Lorenzo Ebicilio gave them a 2-0 lead in opening 40 minutes of the match. However, the Tukkers fought their way back into the match with two impressive goals from Wout
Brama and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marc-Janko-c23484 sealed the win in the dying minutes of the second-half of extra time.
The versatile defender believes that conceding a goal in the stoppage time of the first-half cost them the match. However, the defeat has not shifted his side’s focus from the Eredivisie.
Van der Weil said, “We put in a really good performance and everything seemed to be alright. It was really stupid how we conceded that goal. It was almost half time and we should have held on to our two-goal lead. It would have been very difficult for Twente
to fight back without that goal. They did score though and that gave them a huge boost.”
The Dutch International defender has set his sights on the Eredivisie title, the 30th time in the club’s glorious history.
Van der Weil added, “I just want to win the title. I'd much rather win that than the cup. We have to move on and turn our attention to next week's game. This loss is not a mental blow for us. It only motivates us to do even better next week.”
The Amsterdammers sit second in the league table, trailing the league leaders FC Twente by a solitary point. The two teams will lock horns on the final day of the Eredivisie calendar, May 15, and the winner of the game will take home the Dutch title.
