AFC Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel believes Real Madrid are too good for his side – Eredivisie news
Ajax Amsterdam’s Gregory van der Wiel is optimistic about progressing through to the knockout round of UEFA Champions League, but has admitted that his side will struggle to achieve results against La Liga giants, Real Madrid.
The 23-year-old is a product of the Amsterdammers fabled youth academy and started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2007/08 season. The highly-rated right-back has so far represented the Amsterdam giants in well over 100 matches since his
debut against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede in March 2007.
The Dutch stopper performed exceptionally in the last season, providing rock solid defence for the Amsterdammers at the back. His good performances have not gone unnoticed, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 FC, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Juventus have reportedly expressed
interest in taking his signature before the end of the ongoing summer transfer market. However, the 23-year-old has so far denied moving away from his parent club.
Ajax have been drawn in Group D along with Real Madrid, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 and Dinamo Zagreb. The Amsterdam giants were also drawn together with Los Blancos last term, where they failed to secure a lone point against them.
The Dutch International admitted that the group is a little tough, but believes that his side have a good chance to cement their place in the round-of-16.
“The draw was a bit tough, but you can expect to face good teams in the Champions League. Real are obviously too good for us. Realistically, they are out of our league”, Van der Wiel said while talking to the media.
The Dutch International then went on to reveal that his side will certainly give everything to advance to the next stage of Europe’s primary club competition and believes that his side have a good chance should they secure maximum points against Lyon and
Zagreb.
“We will do our utmost to reach the next round, though, and I'm confident we can do just that. We have to pick up points at home against Lyon and Zagreb. We are definitely not without a chance and will give it our all. We are on the right track with Ajax
and are still working on the areas that need improvement”, Van der Wiel concluded.
Ajax’ chances to progress through to the next phase of the competition are slim. However, should they bag maximum points while playing in front of their home crowd, their chances to play in the round of 16 would grow a lot brighter.
