Ajax Amsterdam crashed out of the UEFA Champions League group stage following their 3-0 loss at the hands of Real Madrid, as Olympique Lyonnais’ impressive 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb spelled their doom.
The Amsterdammers goalkeeper, Kenneth Vermeer, expressed his disappointment after his side failed to progress through to the next phase of the competition. The gloves man openly admitted that he cannot describe the loss.
“It's indescribable; who could have thought this would happen? We knew we might lose to Madrid but we didn't imagine Lyon would win by such a margin. I only heard the score from Zagreb with five minutes to go, there was a free-kick and someone said: 'It's
6-1, we're out”, Vermeer said while talking to the media.
Vurnon Anita, the Amsterdam giants midfielder, also expressed frustration following his side’s elimination from the Europe’s primary club competition when they were in the pole position to make progress to the Round of 16.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder admitted that this is one of his biggest disappointments.
“This is certainly one of the biggest disappointments of my career. We had a feeling beforehand that we would go through. I wasn't aware of the score in Zagreb and then the first thing I heard it was 6-1 to Lyon. We then tried everything we could and that's
when Madrid scored their third”, Anita was quoted as saying to the media.
Although the Amsterdammers started proceedings at home brightly, they still conceded an early goal when Jose Maria Callejon found the back of the net in the 14th minute.
The Dutch champions replied strongly and put consistent pressure on the Madrid giants’ back-line, eventually landing the equaliser at the half-hour mark.
However, the lines-man had other ideas and raised the offside flag just as the ball hit the back of the net, leaving the referee with no chance but to disallow the goal.
Moments later, the Amsterdammers saw another goal disallowed by the referee, after more questionable refereeing.
After seeing two perfect goals being disallowed, the Amsterdam giants never managed to perform at their best while Los Blancos continued to display impressive play.
Four minutes before the half-time break, Gonzalo Higuain doubled the lead while Callejon’s strike in the injury time sealed the game 3-0 in favour of the Madrid giants.
