AFC Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg considering contract extension offer – Dutch Eredivisie news
Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg, is seeking a move away from his current club at the end of the season. But the talented shot-stopper is yet to receive a single offer from interested clubs. Stekelenburg, thus, is considering a contract extension offer from the Amsterdammers.
The Dutch International was linked with a host of top European clubs including the likes of Arsenal FC, Juventus FC, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Schalke 04, who are all eager to add the highly-rated gloves man to their ranks in the summer transfer market. Stekelenburg’s agent earlier revealed that none of the aforementioned clubs have made contact to sign the goalkeeper.
Stekelenburg’s current contract with Ajax runs until the summer of 2012, and the outfit from Amsterdam’s management has recently offered him a contract extension.
“Nothing. Zero point zero. Maybe, it’s because I’ve injured. The only offer I received is from Ajax to extend my contract. I have under consideration that now” Stekelenburg revealed.
“ I have great respect for the board. I’m always treated very well. From that respect, we talked to them last Monday. I’ve received a fantastic offer from Ajax, and there is a second meeting is scheduled. But it has to do what is yet to come my way”, he concluded.
Rumours were rife that the Dutch custodian would be replacing Edwin van der Sar, who is set to hang his gloves at the end of the ongoing season, at Old Trafford. However, Manchester United have not contacted the Ajax management to take Stekelenburg’s signature in the upcoming summer transfer market.
Moreover, following Manuel Neuer’s successful move to Bayern Munich from Schalke 04, rumours were rife that the Dutch International would be the succeeding the departing German International at the Ruhr-based club. However, Die Knappen management are yet to contact Ajax or Stekelenburg.
With no contact to pin his hopes on, the Dutch International is now expected to pen down a contract extension with the club. It remains uncertain whether the gloves man prolongs his stay at Amsterdam Arena makes a move in the upcoming summer transfer market to play at a top European club.
