Reports from Amsterdam indicate that Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg, desires a move to AS Roma in the ongoing summer transfer market. Rob Jansen, Stekelenburg’s agent, has also admitted that his client wishes to move to Serie A ahead of
the new season.
The transfer of the Dutch International has remained in the air for quite some time now, but the recent reports suggest that La Maggica are in a pole position to land the 28-year-old’s signature.
The Giallorossi are in search of a new goalkeeper following the departure of Alexander Doni to Liverpool earlier last week. The Italian outfit have set their sights on the Dutch custodian for quite a long time, though, they also remained linked with RCD
Espanyol’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlos-Kameni-c8464 for a brief while.
However, after failing to reach an agreement with Espanyol, Stekelenburg’s move to La Maggica seems more than likely to be materialised before the 2011/12 season commences.
Jansen revealed that his client is also looking for a move to the Giallorossi, but admitted that the transfer is still far from being completed.
“Maarten would like a move to Roma, otherwise I would not be having talks with the club. The negotiations are not progressing smoothly. The two clubs are some distance apart but there will be further talks today [Thursday] in Amsterdam. Ajax have not yet
set a deadline”, Jansen said while talking to Dutch media.
The Dutch International, who has 40 caps to his name, has played well over 150 matches for the Amsterdammers since making his debut at Amsterdam Arena in February 2002. The shot-stopper has an ongoing contract with Ajax that is due to expire in the summer
of 2012.
Reports suggest that the newly crowned Dutch champions would not let go off their prized asset for anything below than 10 million Euros, while Roma are reluctant to go above 7 million Euros with their offer. The Amsterdam giants would not risk losing the
highly-rated goalkeeper on a free transfer next summer and a move is likely to take place before the summer transfer window draws to a close.
