Ajax Amsterdam’s Toby Alderweireld is eagerly waiting for the start of the 2011/12 season, looking forward to play in the UEFA Champions League. The 22-year-old is optimistic and believes that his side will surely compete successfully at the highest levels.
The young defender is a product of De Joden’s renowned youth academy and started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2008/09 season. His impressive performances in the back-line have quickly turned him into a key player for the Amsterdammers
line-up. He has represented Ajax in 62 matches and managed to find the back of the net on four occasions.
The central defender played an important part in the Amsterdammers’ Eredivisie triumph in the recently concluded season, where they managed to lift the 30th
title in their history on the final day of the season by defeating http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 Enschede in front of their home crowd.
Furthermore, the young defender also played impressively in the Europe’s most prestigious club competition against AC Milan and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid in the group stages. However, with perennial great sides present in the group, chances of Ajax going through to the
round-of-16 were always slim.
The promising youngster believes that the level of Champions League is not too high and believes that his side would do better this time around.
“We have proved this season with the games against AC Milan that we can do it. Many of our players were playing for the first time in the Champions League”, Alderweireld was quoted as saying to the media.
The Belgian International went on to reveal that his side is capable of achieving great results in the coming years.
“It can only get better. With a selection where players average age is around 22 to 23 years, we can certainly achieve a lot. I hope everyone will continue at the club. We are capable of great results”, the central defender concluded.
After winning the league title, expectations are sky-high in Amsterdam as fans are looking for a repeat of the excellent performances. With Alderweireld looking extremely confident ahead of the start of the next season, it seems like the Amsterdammers are
aiming to reclaim the glory days of the 90s, when they were a force to be reckoned with in Euopean championships.
