Reports confirm that Ajax Amsterdam’s Vurnon Anita has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Amsterdam Arena until the summer of 2014. The defensive midfielder has performed impressively and played an important part in the Amsterdammers’ triumph
this season.
The 22-year-old was mainly used as a wingback by the Amsterdammers’ former coach, Martin Jol. Frank de Boer, Jol’s successor, stationed him more often in the midfield. The Dutch International performed brilliantly under De Boer and his performances have not gone unnoticed outside of Netherlands. The young midfielder was heavily linked with a move away to join a top European club in the upcoming summer transfer market.
Furthermore, his previous contract was set to expire in the summer of 2012.
The Ajax management managed acted swiftly to hold on to their prized asset by offering him an improved contract. For his part, Anita signed the contract extension without any hesitation.
“It’s official. I just signed up until mid of 2014.” Anita beamed.
The defensive midfielder, who can also play as left-back, is a product of Ajax’s renowned youth academy. He started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in 2005/06 season but only cemented a first team spot in the recently concluded season. The 22-year-old
has played 75 matches and also managed to find the back of the net on three occasions.
The young midfielder was unable to hide his joy after signing the contract and revealed that prolonging his stay with Ajax was not a difficult choice to make.
“I had not dreamed. I am very proud. This means a lot to me, because Ajax is my first club. I have also become champion this season. It was an easy choice to sign with Ajax. There are still many good games to play at Ajax”, he concluded.
