Question

How often do the brisbane lions wear the old fitzroyish strips? I have never noticed them before! I like the colours a lot.

Can you please give me a little history lesson on fitzroy footy club,

like why don't they exist anymore (changed to brisbane)

why did they change to brisbane.

who were the stars of fitzroy????

Its great to see the old Fitzroy colours getting around on the footy field once again and good on Brisbane for using the jumper as their away strip.

Brisbane only started wearing Fitzroy's colors this year for there away games. Fitzroy merged with Brisbane because they where broke. it was a last minute merger because an hour before the dead line they was ready to merge with north Melbourne.

It is there away guernsey and I hope they stick with it. Having looked at the crowd last night, I can see that there are still a lot of Fitzroy fans out there and they must love seeing something of their club being kept alive.

For a brief history, Fitzroy was a Melbnourne club who were there from day one (1897). Unfortunatly whether due to mismanagement or hard luck, they went broke and their list failed to perform and they suffered quite a few anihilating losses.

In 1996 after the AFL had bailed them out quite a few times, they were given an option to merge with another club. After numerous meetings it was decided that they would merge with the Brisbane Bears and become known as the Brisbane Lions. A number of Fitzroy players made the move north to Brisbane while others were drafted to other clubs and I think one or two senior players retired.

Incidently, the current Brisbane club song is a re-wording of the original Fitzroy club song.

I remember the very last Fitzroy game in 96 quite clearly, against Freo at Subiaco. They lost by about 70 odd points and I shed a tear that day. Its always a ***** when you see old and proud clubs like Fitzroy go under. The decline had been setting in for some time. The club more or less had been broke since 86 and they nearly merged with the Bulldogs. I remember talk of them merging with Melbourne once or shifting to Brisbane.

They played four games in Tassie to try and help things but that pretty much failed and they had to find backers to take care of things in their last year when they couldnt pay their players. Funny thing here is that there was the proposed North Melbourne and Fitzroy merge and the other clubs thought that they would become some superteam. Brisbane Lions become the next unstoppable juggernaut...oh the irony! It BURNS!

I think the last time they made the finals was in 1986 against Hawthorn in the preliminary final which they lost by 60 pts. The last time they were remotely competitive was 1993. They had a decent run in the early 80's but it was more or less a struggle.

Yes, as Hotrod said,  I think they did only start wearing the old Fitzroy colours for certain games this year.

I used to follow Fitzroy before they folded & have always liked their colours the best. Adelaide, second, when they wear their original strip.

Only thing I see missing on this jumper is FFC.

They could have the monogram on the jumper instead of the Lion like on the Gabba jumpers.

I think i read somewhere that they are going to wear them at Melbourne games, they should wear them all the time, it is a 'real' footy jumper, it looks like one if you know what i mean.

they won about 8 flags i think, were very successful in early days, but won their last in 1944.

They folded in 1996 i think, their last melb game was against Richmond, the tigers flogged them, they had no money, were in massive debt and decide to merge with the new club, Brisbane took the best Fitzroy players and the rest went to other clubs, some just left the game.

They many stars, Haydn bunton won 3 brownlows, chicken smallhorn and Dinny Ryan won them as well, they won 5 medals in 6 years, not bad huh,  they all played together, they had other brownlow winners too,Alan 'baron' ruthern, Kevin Murray and Bernie Quinlan also won them, could be some more but i can't remember them.

that's some i can think of, maybe there would be more at a Fitzroy site, but they were a good club early on to win 8 flags by 1944, look at st.kilda, footscray, one flag each in history.

they seem to wear that when they are in melbourne nowadays!

the only problem is that their song, which is great in French of course! allons enfants de la patrie!- has them singing mar-o-o-n blue and gold whereas the Fitzroy strip is vermilion, blue and gold - most of the Liars can't pronounce that. much less sing it.

I absolutely hate the new jumper, GET OVER FITZROY, WE'RE THE BRISBANE LIONS, HOW CAN WE BE A REAL CLUB WEARING THAT DISCRACE.  If they wore that jumper all the time I would cease to support them, very unfair on Lions supporters living in Queesnland.

The Lions only wear the Fitzroy jumper when they play in Melbourne. and they needed other teams to move around Australia so that it could be Australian Football instead of Victorian Football. and i dnt know who played for fitzroy coz i was either not born yet or was too young.
