  1. I seem to remember Warwick Capper and South Melbourne/Sydney playing an exhibition match in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1980's.

There have been a few hybrid games of "International Rules" against Ireland since about the same time - that exploits the similarities between Gaelic Football and Australian Rules.  But overall the efforts have been sporadic and only marginally well received.

I think the attendance at the LA game was less than 20,000 bemused Americans despite millions spent in advertising.

Football appeal in the US is partially limited by the fact that the current US rights holder has about 1% coverage of the North American continent.

  2. AFL is not gonna go international

  3. I don't think the I'd like to see that ad from 98(?) was part of AFL going international. Pretty cool ad though :)

The International Cup is currently on

  4. I am a charter member of the Australian Football Association of North America (AFANA). AFANA is a promotion tool, not the USA comp.

Here is the home page of USA footy.

As Quandry answered, most of the USA, at least 99 percent can no longer watch footy on television, since the 2005 Grand Final.

Footy is on a satellite only channel on Direct TV satellite only, a channel called Setanta North America. Andrew the Wanker thought he had signed the "USA television contract of the century". What a fool, 1 percent or less of the USA can see footy. I cannot and angry does not describe what I think about it.

Andrew and his band of idiots, couldn't market water to a man dying of thirst. Millions, millions, YES MILLIONS of advertising dollars in the USA waiting to line AFL pockets. Andrew don't give a d**n about money, I guess.

Plus, here is my answer from last week from a similar question.

Hope you like this answer. Good luck with your school project.

  5. There are a few Aussie Rules leagues here in England, and the very delightfully titled British Australian Rules Football League, or "BARFL", is based in London.  I think it sounds like something that happens after a game rather than in it...but then that's Aussies in London I suppose.

There have been a few display matches at Kensington Oval ("The Oval", ashes cricket ground) in London in recent years...I went to the last two of these which were held in 2005 (Dockers df Eagles) and 2006 (Cats df Power...two streakers at the game!).  The ground was sold out on both occasuons and loads of Aussies took the opportunity to introduce their pom (and kiwi/saffa/etcetera) mates to the greatest game of all.

Sadly this isn't due to take place until 2009 now, and with International Rules absent for a few years (and played across in Ireland anyway) there's not been much else.  But the BARFL still keeps people interested, and in some divisions there is a playing rule limiting the number of Aussies on the field at any one time which makes for a bit more of a spectacle too.

Games have been played in London by VFL teams since the 1970s, but it really took off in the 90s and 00s.  May it return here soon!

And remember...it's called Aussie Rules because AUSSIES RULE!!

    :-)
