AFL Sydney swans?

I was wondering when the sydney swans started (when it became AFL instead of VFL) im having an argument with hubby he said there been around 75 yrs yes they have but as a melbourne team but as the swans how long please help ty

  2. It all started as South Melbourne – known as the Swans as well.

    In 1981 the Swans received the permission from VFL to play 11 home matches in Sydney the following season. The first match was played at the SCG on Sunday 28th March 1982, when a crowd of 15 764 saw the Swans defeat Melbourne by 29 points.

    In 1985,  the VFL agreed to one of the messiest deals ever associated with football. Dr Geoffrey Edelsten bought the Swans.The Swans became Sydney Swans.

  3. Basically it happened like Big Kev said. And that history was apparently dragged out by all the Melb people at the 2005 Grand Final by way of justifying their support of Sydney over West Coast .
