AGE word problem???

Question

In 2001, Lior was four times as old as Ezra, anf in 2003, Lior was twice as old as Ezra. How many years older than Ezra is Lior??

apparently, the answer is in 2001, Ezra as 1 and Lior was 4 and that Lior is 2 yrs older than Ezra. I completly don't understand this.. thanks =)

Lior = 4

Ezra = 1

2003:

Lior = 6

Ezra = 3

Let y-Ezra's present age

Timeline:

Lior = x-7

Ezra = y-7

(2oo3)

Lior = x-5

Ezra = y-5

(2008 or present)

Lior = x

Ezra= y

Equation:

x-7=4(y-7)

x-5=2(y-5)

Solve:

x-7=4(y-7)

x-7=4y-28

♥x=4y-21♥

x-5=2(y-5)

Substitute for x so,

4y-21-5=1(y-5)

4y-26=2y-10

4y-2y=-10+26

2y=16

♥y=8♥

substitute for y

x=4y-21

x=4(8)-21

x=32-21

♥x=11♥
