Because the Red Wings are the dominant team that have an excellent defense, and the Penguins just came from playing the Flyers who's defense was a lot slower because of the lose of Timonen and Coburn.

So they came into the Finals after playing a slower team, to playing a dominating, experienced team.

But really I agree with Adam , they won because Detroit showed up and Pittsburgh didn't.

Pens looked a lot like they did in Game 4 against the Flyers last week. Forgot to bring their offense. Fleury was fine in goal, but as the baseball players are fond of saying "We need to score more than the other team to win."

YO!  HANNA!   Pitt. didn't play Detroit all season? ? ? ? ?  Those of us from Michigan would like to welcome y'all from dem der hills in Pittysburg to the 21st. century.  They have these things called game tapes and replays that current teams in the rest of the NHL use on a regular basis.  Thought all dem der kids skat'n fer Pit. had da luxery of all dat der tuff in high school and college? ? ?  Guess dat shipment of replay equipment didn't make it to ya?  Why don't you call up the wings and maybe they could fax you a list for game twos line-ups!  You do have fax machines. . . don't ya?

Anyway, yeah, the Pens lost.  Ok.  It's 1 game.  The Wings looked like a machine but there is no way they shut down the Pens PP every game.  The mistakes and defensive lapses are easily correctable.

Therien is too good of a coach to not adjust the system.  Maybe it was jitters or whatever, but once the Pens get their footing back it'll be a different series.

Detroit has to win 3 more games.  There is no chance they will all be as easy as last night.

Here's what happened, the Penguins had a cake walk to the the finals and thought they were some hot S**t, only now they have to face a Red Wings team that is heads and shoulders better than anybody the Pens had faced so far. The result is the Penguins got destroyed. Will the Penguins step it up and play better? Probably. Will they win the series? Probably not.

Game 1 out of a 7 game series. Being a Pens fan we had our moments.  Detriot came out and was complete.  They deserve the win.  This match up is great. Two awesome teams.  If you cannot put atleast one goal on how many power plays what can you really say. Lastey when your goalie comes out the gate on his rear it will be a tough game.  Dont sell the series out after a win.  It will be a long series.  You cant hate or count the Pens out but for both teams, this is the top 2 teams in the league.

What went wrong? Thats easy, the Pen's are unfortunate enough to have to play the Wings.  If you compare the 2, be sure to factor in Kronwall. Getting caught with your head down by this guy is NOT a good thing.

Can the pen's constantly roll 4 lines? So far no real threat.

I just think that the Pens were a little overconfident and underestimated Detroit since the Wings are considered to be an aging team.  They figured that once Crosby got out there and got the puck, it was going to be all over.  They forgot that Detroit, despite having the "older" players, still have a lot of young hotshots too who are able to go toe-to-toe with the Pens.   Add that to the fact that nerves may have played a part since many of the Pens were in the finals for the first time and Detroit has been to the finals and knows what it takes to get the job done, it's understandable by the score was 4-0.   I predict that the next game is going to be different.  I'm still rooting for the Wings to win, but I think the Pens are going to be a little more focused and try to stay out of the box late in the game.

And yes, I'm laughing right along with you.

Not knowing your opponent is a lousy excuse.  Its not like Detroit  "knew" what matchups would work best.

I think this was totally expected.  The Penguins said that they would not change their game going in.  But in every article on NHL.com I read all the changes they will make.  Like dumping the puck in more.  That will only make Detroit's job easier.  When you give them the puck, they make you pay.

This game wasn't a matter of the Pens not showing up, it was a matter of Detroit is better.  This is the excuse everytime a team loses to Detroit.  Dallas used this excuse too.  Its time to realize that DETROIT DOES THIS TO THEIR OPPONENTS.  They dictate the game, and that is why they win.

We all saw how well Pittsburgh started the game, because they were excited.  They didn't get their usual first goal because they are playing a good team for once.  The first period was the feeling out period.  The second and third periods were reality.

We all also know that Pittsburgh is a Power Play team.  Now that they are playing an aggressive, attacking penalty kill, it will be very difficult to score with regularity on the power play.  They just aren't used to the puck pressure in every zone on the PP.  Sure the games will probably be closer, but in reality not only is Detroit more experienced, they are better.  The fact that they are better is why they will win.

Oh, and you say there is no way to shut down the Pens power play all series... there's no way the Pens will stop the Wings PP all series either, nor will they have every first goal waved off.  The league gave the Pens every opportunity in the first and the Pens still didn't do anything.
