I'm trying out for the volleyball team at my highschool this year and we have 2 tryouts a day that are each an hour long. The coach said we will go to the track somedays for workouts in the morning. But other than that I have no idea what we do for tryouts! Im sooo nervous! Do you know some things that we do during tryouts? Tryouts are for a week and there are 2 1 hour sessions each day, so do u have any idea what we do? HELP!!

  1. You don't have to be perfect and you don't have to know everything. It would definitely help if you have gone through some camps and clinics.

It really depends on how many girls will go to try out at your school. If you have 20+ players showing up at the try out, expect some conditioning and running. You will be asked to serve, bump/pass, and do some hitting. If you know how to set, tell the coach to give a chance... but you don't have to be good at setting. You are expected to serve 5+ (out of 10) into the court, and know or quickly learn how to do 3-step approach. Anything extra is a plus.

A good team would need six good servers, two or more "above average" setters, five or more good passers, and two or more "consistent" hitters. You don't have to know how to dive or how to roll, but it would be nicer if you can do one of those "advanced" movement (be careful, you don't want to hurt yourself). It would be nice to have tall and strong hitter, but it is more important to hit the ball consistently, or place the ball consistently.

You may judge the competitiveness of your tryout by watching how many hands are up when your coach asks questions like "who played volleyball before", "who played club before".

  2. Volleyball tryouts are just like volleyball practice. You will bump around, practice spiking, serve, and maybe even play a scrimmage game. (At least this is how my try outs are) The coaches want to look for the skill in the players when they actually play - therefore the only way to decide who will be on the team will be to play around. So, I would say practice your basic volleyball skills and kill the nerves when you attend volleyball try outs.

  3. for mine we just did a lot of scrimmaging. they also tested us on the skills like serving, passing to the setter, spiking, blocking, and so on. we also did the mile run for endurance testing. But my best advise...keep a positive attitude (dont complain)some coaches will pick somebody who isn't as good but has a good attitude rather that someone who is amazing that has a bad attitude. also work hard and if they give you advise on how to do something better/different take it with a smile...there just trying to help!

  4. Whatever you do DON'T whine!!! And don't ever SUCK up.......... We have 1 2 and a half hour practices every day and on the first day we run a mile...... for us we have to make the mile in under 10 minutes or we can't be in athletics...... but that just us..... you'll probably set, bump, hit, serve, and probably scrimmage...........

  5. We'll seems I have volleyball try-outs also this up-coming Monday too, but I've been playing Varsity volleyball since my freshman year lol.

At my HS my coach's set up basic drills focusing on hitting, setting, and passing (like serve receive drills focusing on passing etc.) then all together they rate it all out of 10 and add it up in the end.

Since this is HS volleyball they already assume you know all the different volleyball positions for all players (setter, libero/DS, right, left) either in a 6-2 or 5-1 or perimeter defense, you gotta know it all. What HS coach's look for are players who are all around playable whether you can play setter in one match and a DS in the next so more variety of plays can be played out and boost your chances on winning.

Here we also have several fitness tests like running a mile in under 7min 30sec and a monster agility test. While coach's are always looking for fit players they are mostly looking for players who can push themselves during a game, practice what ever. A coach is able to help you with the physical stuff but to get your mind in the game it's all up to you.

And the number one thing coach's love from their players is one you cheer for other players even during try-outs cheering on one of your competition shows your good sportsmanship and shows the coach's that you want to be here to play volleyball and you want to play against the best to get on that team. Don't be nervous, don't bum yourself out of one bad hit or pass. When playing in competition if you bring yourself down after one mistake then your team will follow, remember this is a TEAM sport, everyone makes mistakes.

    Good luck

  6. well go with the flow and HIT THEM BALLS!!!!!

  7. stay calm. don't worry. just go out and try your best. that is always the best attitude to have and has helped me make many teams such as team bc. don't be too serious either try to have a little fun in the process. go out there and give it your best and thats all you can ask of yourself. remember, coaches pick the kids with the best potential so if you aren't the best out there don't totally throw in the towel and quit. also, be in good physical condition and eat well and drink a TON of water. I've been to tryouts where you play every position in the tryout so be prepared for that and i've been to others where they will run you and run you and run you till you pretty much collapse. and that was in 8th grade so the best bet for you is to stay in shape and keep practicing your skills whenever you have time in the backyard or anywhere. and just remember DON'T SUCK UP TO THE COACH! that will get you no where! good luvl

  8. you could throw the ball to the setter, then they'll make you do your spiking approach, they can give you a down ball, short ball, and they'll tell you to get under the ball and stuff. Just remember to always encourage someone or always be positive. They usually look for your attitude the first thing.

  9. well most schools have you run at least a mile in the morning and you can expect a lot of conditioning like wall sits, sit-ups and endurance drills. the main things to do to be prepared are eat a really good breakfast like a banana, bagels, or peanut butter toast, lots of protein!!  and be sure to be vocal and call and go for every ball because the coach will notice your putting in extra effort. during workouts never say your tired or say your gonna quit. just keep up your energy and never give up!!

  10. practice

  11. I really enjoy my tryouts because they are basically all day ( 7 hrs with a lunch break, like working).  In my tryouts, they teach you the fundamentals and see how you respond to them.  But in most cases, the coach(es) put you on the "test" to see if you know your stuff.  In odd cases, if they see that you have some "raw talent" then they will want to develop it and maybe put you in like the freshman or jv team.  It is like volleyball practice but more intense and less fooling around.  Always work to your potential and never let your guard down.  Have a positive attitude, follow directions, and interact with others because coaches are also aware of those things, not just skills.
