When an AHL team that has been affiliated with one NHL team changes affiliation to another single NHL team, what happens? For instance Buffalo broke off their relationship with Rochester and became affiliated with Portland, do all the Rochester players go to Portland? and all the Portland players go to Anaheim's new AHL affiliate? and what about coaches and staff?

  1. All players that have contracts with there respected NHL teams move to were there AHL affiliations are. Example Buffalo's players and coach's move on to Portland while Florida's players stay in Rochester. Any players and coaches that signed with Rochester stay and play for the Amerks. It is sad to see Rochester let Buffalo go. The Crunch and Amerks games will never be the same. Hoped this helped.

  2. All personnel contracted to Anaheim that are in Portland will be moving to Iowa.

All personnel contracted to Buffalo at Rochester will be going to Portland.

Any players not the property of Anaheim in Portland will be free agents regardless of the status of their contracts.  All management currently in Portland are contracted to Anaheim and will move with the team.

  3. Stolen from a similar question:

The affiliation agreements are for the NHL team to supply players and coaches to that team. Any player that is currently under contract with the NHL team will move with the NHL team's affiliate team. Some minor league teams carry a few players not under contract with their NHL sponsor, those would be assigned by the NHL team that holds the contract.

I'm assuming that the coaches and staff have similar agreements with the team or parent team.
